Conditions we study

Six areas, chosen deliberately

We do not cover every condition. We work where our investigators have run the condition before and our site is already set up for the tests a study needs.

Heart conditions

Heart failure, high blood pressure, and cholesterol. Scans and heart monitoring are done in our own building, so you are not sent elsewhere and made to wait.

14 studies since 2010

Digestive conditions

Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and other long term gut conditions, including studies that involve endoscopy.

9 studies since 2013

Brain and nerve conditions

Migraine, epilepsy, and early memory conditions. Several of these studies use a simple diary you fill in at home.

11 studies since 2012

Joint and autoimmune conditions

Rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and related conditions where joint pain and stiffness are the main problem.

12 studies since 2011

Lung and breathing conditions

Asthma, COPD, and scarring of the lungs. Breathing tests are done on site by staff trained to one standard.

8 studies since 2015

Diabetes and weight

Type 2 diabetes, obesity, and thyroid conditions. These studies usually run for a year or more, so we plan them around your routine.

7 studies since 2017

What is running at the moment

If one of these looks relevant to you, call or email us and we will talk it through. Nothing below is an offer to enroll you, and asking about a study commits you to nothing.

Enrolling Heart failure

A once daily tablet for chronic heart failure

Looking at whether the treatment keeps people out of hospital and makes day to day activity easier. We deliberately set a wide age range on this one, because heart failure is not a young person's condition and trials too often recruit as though it were.

  • About 18 months, roughly one visit a month
  • 168 of 240 places filled
Enrolling Crohn's disease

Comparing two treatments for Crohn's disease

For people whose symptoms are moderate to severe. If you do not improve on the comparison treatment, you are offered the other one at the end rather than simply being discharged.

  • Floral Park, New York
  • About 12 months, includes two endoscopies
  • 74 of 120 places filled
Waiting list Psoriatic arthritis

Adjusting treatment to hit a target

Comparing a plan where treatment is stepped up until symptoms reach a set target against usual care. All the places are taken for now, but we expect to open a few more later this year.

  • Floral Park, New York
  • About 24 months
  • 196 places, all filled
Finished 2025 Migraine

A treatment to prevent migraine attacks

Ran for a further twelve months after the main study ended. Nine out of ten people who joined stayed to the end, which we put down to letting them keep their symptom diary on paper if they preferred it.

  • Floral Park, New York
  • 310 people completed the study
  • Everyone who took part received a plain language summary

Taking part

What actually happens, step by step

People usually want to know four things: how much time it takes, what is done to them, whether it costs anything, and whether they can stop. Here is the honest version.

1

A conversation

You call or email, and someone from the research team talks you through what is open and what it would involve. No commitment, no pressure, and no medical details needed over email.

2

A screening visit

A clinician checks whether the study genuinely suits you. You get the full information sheet to take home, and you can say no at any point, including after this visit.

3

The study itself

Visits are scheduled around your life, including evenings and weekends. Travel costs are reimbursed. The same coordinator looks after you throughout, so you are not explaining yourself again each time.

4

Afterwards

You return to your own doctor's care, and when the study reports you are offered a plain language summary of what was found, including when the answer was disappointing.

Your rights

Four things that are true of every study we run

  • It will not cost you anything. Study treatment and study visits are free, and reasonable travel costs are paid back to you.
  • You can stop whenever you want. Without giving a reason, and without it changing the care you get from your own doctor.
  • An independent committee approved it. Not us. Every study and every information sheet is checked by people who do not work here.
  • Your details stay private. Results are only ever published as totals. You are never identifiable, and your data is never used for marketing.

Wondering whether one of these is right for you?

Call the research line and ask. It takes a few minutes, it commits you to nothing, and you will get a straight answer rather than a form.
